Setting File Permissions

File permissions can be set from Windows XP or from Linux because user files are accessible from either platform. Note that from Windows you can set permissions for files, not for directories. If you want to change directory permissions, for example to allow people to view your personal web page, you must do that from Linux. See our directions specific to setting permissions for web pages.

Here's how to set permission on a file so that everyone can view a file.

1. Navigate to the file of interest.

2. Right click. Select Properties.

3. Choose the Security tab, and then highlight Everyone.

4. Set the permissions by checking the boxes to either allow (or deny) that file permission. In the illustration below, everyone has permission to view the file. Click OK.
