How to Map a Drive![]()
You map a drive to give you easy access to files that are in directories other than your home directory or if you are working on a non-college administered computer. Before you map a drive, you need to know the name of the file share and you may need to know the domain in which you are working.
All college-administered Windows computers are in the engin domain (as of 3 July 2009). If you are not using a college-administered Windows computer, you may need to map drives that are in the engin domain. Using Windows Vista to map a drive, open Computer (or any view of a drive), and select from the Tools menu, Map Network Drive. If you do not see the Tools menu, press the Alt key. Select a drive letter (Z: in the illustration), enter the share name in the Folder field, and click Finish.

From Windows XP, open My Computer and click on the map drive icon (follow the
line in the illustration below) or select Tools | Map Network Drive.
Select a drive letter, enter the share name in the Folder field, and click Finish.

When you map a network drive, use this form:
\\name.drive.engin.uiowa.edu\name
where name is your login ID or share name. If you
are then prompted to Connect As…, enter:
engin\yourname and your password.
where yourname is your login ID, not the share name.
Note that in the illustration above, Reconnect at logon is checked. This is the right setting if you are mapping a drive from your office and you want to be able to use that mapped drive regularly. Do not check Reconnect if you are mapping a drive from home, from a public remote site, or from any general assignment classroom.
Using Konqueror, start by opening the file browser. In the location box, use the samba interface as shown below.

When you map a network drive, use this form:
smb://name.drive.engin.uiowa.edu/name
where name is your login ID or share name.
If you are then prompted to authorize your connection, enter your engineering account ID (Username) and password.
