css.engineering.uiowa.edu    How to Map a Drive

You map a drive to give you easy access to files that are in directories other than your home directory or if you are working on a non-college administered computer. Before you map a drive, you need to know the name of the file share for files in an account other than your own and you may need to know the domain in which you are working.

All college-administered Windows computers are in the engr domain. If you are not using a college-administered Windows computer, you may need to map drives that are in the engr domain.

Drive Mapping

To map a drive, open My Computer and click on the map drive icon (follow the line in the illustration below) or select Tools | Map Network Drive. Select a drive letter (P: in the illustration) and the Folder is name or share name.

map drive dialogue box

When you map a network drive, use this form:
   \\name.drive.engr.uiowa.edu\name
where name is your login ID or share name. If you are then prompted to Connect As…, enter:
   engr\yourname and your password.
where yourname is your login ID, not the share name.
The drive mapping for the Windows applications server is
   \\app00.engr.uiowa.edu

In the illustration, you cannot see all of the share name mapping; it is \\csoffice.drive.engr.uiowa.edu\csoffice, as described in the paragraph above.

Note that in the illustration above, Reconnect at logon is checked. This is the right setting if you are mapping a drive from your office and you want to be able to use that mapped drive regularly. Do not check Reconnect if you are mapping a drive from home, from a public remote site, or from any general assignment classroom.
