css.engineering.uiowa.edu    Setting DHCP on Windows Computers

To connect your computer to the public computer ports at the bar in the 2nd floor entry area and in the Engineering Student Commons, your must have configured your computer to use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). DHCP allows your computer to obtain a temporary IP address when  connected to these ports. Using DHCP means that you do not have to register your computer with CSS.

Set DHCP for Windows Vista; for  Windows XP; for Windows 2000 .

Windows Vista

Go to Start | Network; click on Network and Sharing Center in the Network window, then Manage Network Connections. On the Network Connections window, right lock on Local Area Connection and select Properties from the drop-down menu. In the Local Area Connections Properties window, select Internet Protocol Version 4. Then click Properties (lower right), as highlighted below.

On the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window, verify that Obtain an IP Address automatically is selected, as shown below.

Windows XP

Go to Start | Control Panel | Network Connections | Local Area Connection and select Properties. Or just highlight Local Area Connection, right click, and select Properties. You'll get the dialogue box shown below.

Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), as shown above, and click Properties. In the resulting dialogue box for Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, shown below, set Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.

Click OK. You must restart your computer to have these settings active.

Windows 2000

Go to Start | Settings | Network and Dial-up Connection | Local Area Connection.

From the Local Area Connection Status dialogue box, select Properties.

From the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialogue box, set Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.

You must restart your computer. Once your computer restarts, you are ready to use the public ports.
