ANSYS Information

Vendor: ANSYS, Inc. web site
Category: Finite element analysis software package
Local Documentation: notes

The version run on the Engineering Computer Network workstations is the university high edition, which is available only to students. It has all of the same features as the commercial version, but has help files and other resources that are geared towards university students. Includes Fluent and Gambit.

ANSYS Description

ANSYS is a finite element analysis software package that is used to break down structural and thermodynamics problems that are too difficult to solve by hand or with an ordinary calculator into a number of “finite elements.” A solution is generated for each element, and they are combined to create an overall solution to the problem. In addition to solution generation tools, comprehensive analysis and graphics tools are also included, which allow the user to effectively visually model various types of systems.

ANSYS Usage

What It Does

Information, such as nodal coordinates and mechanical and thermal loading, is entered into a text editor and is uploaded into ANSYS, or is entered directly into the ANSYS program using the main menu tools. An analysis application is then run, and ANSYS generates a solution for the uploaded problem. This software package may be used to analyze any type of mechanical loading, structural, or thermodynamics problem.

License Information

We have 50 ANSYS teaching licenses, 50 Fluent teaching licenses, and 15 Fluent research licenses. You must set the license preference to use the research license, as explained below:

  1. Run anslic_admin
  2. From Global Settings, select Use Academic License. (The default is Commercial License.)
  3. If the license ANSYS Academic Research CFD is not at the top of the list, select the Move Up button (to the right of the main window) until the license is at the top of the list.
  4. Select Apply, then OK.

These steps will save a preferences file in your home directory under .ansys/v120/licensing/license.preferences.xml

Gambit is not available to research users. The 25 teaching licenses are reserved for class use. Researchers must use the ICEM CFD, purchase a Gambit license, or find a different meshing tool.
