Lab Hardware: Computers, Scanners, Printers ![]()
In the CSS labs, a variety of hardware is available to all Engineering account users. The hardware is divided between two operating systems: Linux and Windows Vista. To get the best use of the labs and lab resources, know the differences in the hardware that has those operating systems installed. The newest machines are the fastest. The newest Windows computer in the lab is the HP Z400. The newest Linux computers in the labs are the XW4600s, but the most capable Linux computers are the XW8400s , which are available remotely.
The table below lists the computers and workstations available in each of the Elder, Hering, Henry Electronic classrooms, and 2301 labs. Of the 196 total workstations, 28 run Linux and 168 run Windows. The fastest Linux machines are the XW8400s available remotely. The newest Windows computers are the Z400s in Elder north and both Hering labs.
Click on the hardware type for a picture and description. There is no photo of the XW8400 Linux computers because they are not physically in the labs but are available remotely.
Notice that each Windows computer or Linux workstation has a name. Windows are named L-COExxx and Linux named L-LNXxxx. If you have trouble with a computer, please report the problem to the CSS consultant, 1253 SC, 319-335-5055, and include the name of the computer that is being difficult.
Both Elder and Hering labs have two LaserJet printers in the area between the north and south sections of the labs; those printers are named ptrcss00-ptrcss03. The printer in 2301 SC is ptrcss05. Hering north and south labs each have a local printer attached to a computer. These resume printers are not stocked with paper. Bring your own paper. There is no charge to use the resume printers. The computers that have the resume printers also have Acrobat Pro installed.
Want to print in color? There is one color LaserJet and an HP Photosmart printer in the CSS consulting office, 1253 SC.
There is one scanner in each section of the Hering and Elder labs attached to a Windows Vista computer.

The XW8400 computers are the Linux computers that are not in the labs but available remotely. They are named L-LNX000 through L-LNX015. Use SSH or the NX Windows client to connect to these computers. They have Intel dual core Xeon 5100 series processors, 16 gigabytes of RAM, and a 500 gigabyte data drive. You can store files in the /var/tmp directory of these machines. These machines were originally installed in the Hering and Elder labs in summer 2007. |
