Lab Hardware: Computers, Scanners, Printers ![]()
In the CSS labs, a variety of hardware is available to all Engineering account users. The hardware is divided between two operating systems: Linux and Windows XP. To get the best use of the labs and lab resources, know the differences in the hardware that has those operating systems installed. The newest machines are the fastest. The newest Windows computer in the lab is the HP XW4400; the new HP XW8400 runs Linux.
Here is a listing of what is available in each of the labs. Of the 155 total workstations, 20 run Linux and 137 run Windows. The fastest Linux machines are the XW8400s in the Elder labs. The fastest Windows computers are the XW4400s in Elder south and Henry Electronic Classroom 1245.
There is one scanner in each section of the lab attached to a Windows XP computer.
Each pair of labs has two LaserJet printers, a 4350 and a 4250 each. There is one color LaserJet and an HP Photosmart printer in the CSS consulting office, 1253 SC.

| The XW4100 computers were installed in 2004. The computers in the Elder and Hering labs have a 2.8 or a
2.4 gigahertz Pentium 4 processor; those in the Henry Electronic Classroom
run at 2.8 gigahertz. Some have hyper-threading, some don't. They also
have 1.5 gigabytes of RAM and CD-RW drives. You can use the CD burners
to create CDs of files you don't need access to all the time. These computers
also have front USB ports for a digital camera or portable device.
