Eudora is a graphical email program than runs on Windows (and Macintosh) computers.

Installing Eudora on Self-administered Computers

To set up Eudora on a self-administered or home computer, download Eudora from the ITS software page. The download file is a self-extracting file. Double click to open and install Eudora. Answer the installer questions and use the information below to set up Eudora.

Setting Your Account Information

  1. The first time you start Eudora, the New Account Wizard opens to set information specific to your account. Click Next.
  2. Choose Create a brand new email account (if not selected by default); click Next.
  3. In the Personal Information window, enter your name as you want it to appear in the From: line; e.g.Bea Greene. Click Next.
  4. For your Email Address, enter loginID@engineering.uiowa.edu where loginID is your engineering account ID, or enter your PH alias, which has the form firstname-lastname@uiowa.edu. Using the example above, the address would be bgreene@engineering.uiowa.edu or bea-greene@uiowa.edu. Click Next.
  5. Verify that your login ID is correct or enter it (e.g., bgreene); click Next.
  6. The Incoming Email Server name, mail.engineering.uiowa.edu, should be filled in. If installing on a self-administered machine, enter the server name mail.engineering.uiowa.edu. The mail server type is set to IMAP; select POP if desired. Click Next.
  7. No IMAP Location Prefix is needed in this window, so leave the space blank and click Next.
  8. The Outgoing Email Server is mail.engineering.uiowa.edu. Select Allow Authentication to allow you to send mail through our server. Set a secure connection by selecting Required, Alternate Port in Secure Sockets when Sending. Press Next then Finish. mail setting, alternate port
  9. Before connecting to get mail from the mail server, Eudora asks to put Junk Mail in the Junk mailbox. Reply Yes or No.

Once your intial set up is completed, go to Tools | Options | Checking Mail and set "Secure Sockets when Receiving" to Required, STARTTLS.

Directories and Address Books

eudora. directory servicesOnce Eudora starts, you should activate using the College of Engineering and the University of Iowa directories. Go to Tools | Directory Services or press Ctrl Y. On the right side of the Directory Services screen, you’ll see the Protocols and Servers. Check the boxes for White Pages University of Iowa and College of Engineering Directory, as shown.

Notice that Eudora will query several directories at the same time. Any directory that is checked will be searched, as well as your address book(s), when you enter a query.

Changing Settings

Once Eudora is running, to change or check any settings, go to Tools | Options. You'll find settings to change how Eudora acts and appears.

You can change many settings on each screen. See the sample Getting Started screen below where you can modify your real name, return address, etc.

The Checking Mail category has settings for how often to check for new messages and save password. Sending mail has a setting to send messages immediately or queue written messages for sending. Chose stationery or signatures, and keeping copies of sent messages in Composing Mail. To set a preview window, go to Viewing Mail. Set spelling options from Spell Checking.
