Below you will find information about the mail system at the College of Engineering. Find mail client configuration information on the mail email page. Also you can read the Email FAQs.

Email Address

For users of electronic mail on the Engineering network, you will receive mail from the outside world at the following Internet mail address:
     loginID@engineering.uiowa.edu
where loginID is your engineering account login ID. You can also set mail delivery so that people can send mail to your UI email routing address, first-last@uiowa.edu, and have mail delivered to your engineering account. To set this delivery, use ISIS (student), HR Self Service (faculty and staff), talk to the ITS Customer Information Desk, 384-0800, or send email to its-information@uiowa.edu

Engineering Account

Your Engineering account includes an email account. You access email using the same login ID and password as for accessing files and documents. We support several mail clients: Thunderbird on Linux and Windows; Outlook on Windows; and Webmail, a browser-based mail client. You'll find information about these clients from the main email page.

Mail Server

The college mail server is an IMAP server, which handles both IMAP and POP protocols. When you configure your mail client, use
mail.engineering.uiowa.edu
for both the incoming and the outgoing/sending mail server.

Quota

Each user's mail account has a quota. This is separate storage that is not associated with your home directory (H: drive) space. Therefore, the amount stored in your mail account has no effect on your home directory quota and vice versa. Your quota allocation depends upon your Engineering College classification and is subject to revision. Mail quotas were last increased in October 2009. Mail quotas are:

Account Type Quota
Engineering students 500 megabytes
Engineering faculty & staff 1 gigabyte

You can also use the CSS account tools to check your quota and space usage or login to Webmail to find that information.

Over Quota

If you go over your quota only a moderate amount for no longer than a few days, then the mail server will send you warning messages, but nothing else will happen. If you stay over your quota or go excessively over, then we will block your inbox so that you quit receiving new mail and will send you error messages when you connect. Your new mail will be held in a system directory for 5 days. If you get under quota quickly, the held mail will be delivered to you; otherwise it will be returned to the sender as undeliverable.

If you go over quota, delete unnecessary mail or move it to folders in your home directory. Things that take up space that you may not be aware of are attachments (delete copies you have stored elsewhere) and copies of sent messages. If you have set your mail client to move deleted messages to the Trash, you will have to purge (Thunderbird; Webmail) the Trash to remove messages immediately and free up your disk space. Use the account management tools to check your usage.

Special Folders: Trash, Spam, Junk

Trash

Trash is a special folder in your mail account. Email, messages or folders, that is in your Trash folder for 7 days is automatically deleted after that span on time, whether you put messages in the trash with Thunderbird, Outlook, or Webmail. The deletion is triggered by the date the message is put in the Trash, not the date the message is received or opened. If you delete a message by putting it in the Trash, within a week you can open the Trash and retrieve that message, unless you have set your client to delete messages from the Trash immediately.

If your mail client supports a move-deleted-messages-to-Trash feature, we recommend that you use it. Thunderbird :  Tools | Account Settings | Server Settings | "When I delete a message," select Move it to the Trash folder. With this setting, if you decide that you want the message that you threw away yesterday, it will be in the Trash for 7 days.

Spam, Junk, Deleted Items

If you have created a mail folder named “Spam”, messages stored there are also removed after 7 days. Messages in folders named Junk (Thunderbird), and Junk E-mail and Deleted Items (Outlook) are also removed after 7 days in the folder.

If you retrieve messages in Junk or Deleted Items folders, be aware that messages will stay in those folders for only 7 days. To store messages indefinitely, move them to a different folder. You may need to modify filters you have created if you want to store messages in a folder that will not get cleaned out regularly.

Security

Our mail server requires an encrypted secure communications protocol called SSL. You use SSL to prevent network hackers from eavesdropping on your network traffic and getting your password. To read and send mail, you must authenticate and use a secure connection to the mail server (mail.engineering.uiowa.edu).

Webmail always runs in secure mode. You must set secure mode to use Thunderbird and Outlook, or any other mail client, with the engineering mail server.
